Cover: A sunny afternoon spent fishing and hiking along Upper Kananaskis Lake. The fish weren’t biting, but I ‘caught’ this pretty view of the sun dipping behind Mount Lyautey as the Kananaskis River flows into the lake.
January
The Standish Viewing Deck at Banff Sunshine Village is one of my favourite hideaway spots to take a break while skiing- the bountiful, untouched snow offers the comfiest seat to enjoy this outstanding view.
February
Two elk out for an evening walk along the Three Sisters Parkway in Canmore, Alberta. A month with Family Day, Valentine’s Day and (for my fellow uni students) reading week… there’s lots to love.
March
A wintery scene of Athabasca Falls in Jasper National Park. I especially love this spot in the winter months when the water and mist freeze to the rock, emphasizing the shadows and depths of the canyon.
April
A beautiful bluebird day along the Icefields Parkway with an obligatory stop at the Peyto Lake Viewpoint.
May
This is one of the most exciting times of year in the mountains; the peaks are still holding onto some snow, but longer and warmer days ensure plentiful opportunity to chase views like this. Of all the waterfalls I found while hiking up this creek, this one was by far the most impressive with the open view of the Three Sisters.
June
This sheep wandered away from the others to take a rest and pose for a photo overlooking the Athabasca River, then came closer to us. With limited space behind me, I’ll never forget how it felt to be feet apart, looking eye to eye with this wild animal, who continued to hike alongside me. My heart goes out to the people of Jasper who faced the devastating wildfire this summer.
July
A nice hike around Upper Kananaskis Lake will bring you here, Lower Kananaskis Falls, where the Kananaskis River flows out of the back country and into the lake. I love how Mount Lyautey and the valley behind shape the light down the water.
August
This morning at Bow Lake was undoubtedly one of most peaceful, serene, and calm experiences I’ve had here.
September
Fall is my favourite season in the Rockies particularly because of the larch trees that turn their needles a golden yellow and scatter the valleys, like this one looking south down Highwood Pass, with pops of colour.
October
This was an eventful hike to say the least- rain, slippery shale sections, sudden snowstorms, and relying on headlights so as not to walk into a bear. The view at Taylor Lake made it 100% worth it.
November
An incredibly lucky moment to see a gorgeous momma grizzly bear with her 3(!!) cubs, enjoying a family walk together. Photo was taken from a safe location with a telephoto lens.
December
A frosty evening along the Bow River coming together to create a post-card like atmosphere beneath Castle Mountain in Banff National Park.
